The Department of mental health nursing was established when the college was started in the year 2003 with B.Sc (N) Programme. The institution was approved by INC and affiliated to Pondicherry University. In 2009 the institution came under Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University, Puducherry. The programmes offered currently are M.Sc (N) and P.8.B.Sc (N) as per the norms laid out by INC. Currently the department is adequately staffed with dedicated faculties guided by eminent personalities In the field of psychiatric nursing. The faculties of the department has attended / participated & presented papers at various regional / national conferences, workshops, CNE programme, and journal clubs. The students’ academic performances of mental health nursing are 100%. The department library has been updated with latest editions of books and journals from time to time in pace with current trends.

Philosophy

Philosophy is to reflect the origins of humanistic ideas many of which have their roots in existentialism and to reflect the core themes of mental health which are concerned with the values of nursing profession.

It takes a holistic view seeing distress behavior as an outcome of disharmony in the biological, Psycho - social and spiritual Dimensions of Human Experience.

  • It provides a holistic, person - centered approach to assessment

Mental health professionals need to be able to hold hope for those seeking care, become companions on their journeys to recovery.

In Psychiatric Nursing compassionate care is tile out of being rather than doing. It is about being with people in a way which is respectful empathetic and enabling which nourishes the growth of the troubled individual towards become a fully functioning person who has the resourcefulness to manage the problems and opportunities of living

OBJECTIVE:

To assist the students in developing expertise and in depth understanding in the field of mental health nursing. It will help the students to appreciate the client as a holistic individual and develop skill to function as mental health nurse specialist. It will further enable the student to function as educator, manager and researcher in the field of mental health nursing.

At the end of the course the students will be able to:

  2. Discuss the philosophy and scope of mental health nursing
  3. Explain the principles and standards of mental health nursing.
  4. Describe nature, purpose and process of assessment of mental health nursing.
  5. Identify therapeutic communication skill and nurse patient relationship.
  6. Explain the treatment modalities and therapies used In mental disorders.
  7. Describe the etiology, psychopharmacology, clinical manifestations diagnostic criteria and management of childhood and adolescent disorders including mental subnormalities.
  8. Identify the psychiatric emergencies and crisis Intervention.
  9. Explain the legal aspects applied in mental health nursing.
  10. Describe the model of preventive psychiatry and community mental health services
  11. Appreciate the trends and issues In the field of mental health and mental health nursing.
  12. Explain the dynamics of personality development and human behavior.
  13. Describe the concepts of psychobiology in mental disorders and its implications for mental health nursing.
  14. Demonstrate therapeutic communication skills in all Interactions.
  15. Demonstrate the role of mental health nurse practitioner in various therapeutic modalities.
  16. Establish and maintain therapeutic relationship with the individual and groups.
  17. Uses assertive techniques in personal and professional actions.
  18. Promotes self esteem of clients, self and others.
  19. Apply nursing process approach in caring for patients with mental disorders.
  20. Describe the psychopharmacological agents, their effects and nurses’ role.
  21. Recognize the role of mental health nurse practitioner and as a member of mental health team.
  22. Describe various types of alternative system of medicines used in mental health settings.
  23. Incorporate evidence based nursing practice and identifies the areas of research In the field of mental health nursing.
