STATE LEVEL SYMPOSIUM
July, 2017

“ Understanding Research Methodology-Basic To Advanced” The State level symposium on “Understanding Research Methodology-Basic To Advanced” organized by Research unit of Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College was held on 6th and 7th July 2017. The first session of symposium by Prof.N. Seetharaman ,Head of the Deparment, Community Medicine ,MGMC&RI deliberated on “Review of Revelant literature”. The inaugural address was given by Vice Chancellor Prof. K.R.Sethuraman SBV. The scientific session was started by Mrs. Kripa Angeline Associate Professor ,KGNC on “ Essentials of Nursing Research” followed by Dr.R.Lakshmi.R,Assistant Professor,JIPMER deliberated on “Understanding Research Approach and Design”.The post lunch session started with elaborate and interesting presentation of Dr.Pruthu Gowda.T.K, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, MGMC&RI on “Sampling technique and sampling size calculation” followed by Dr. Renuka K Dean, Faculty of Nursing Sciences, SBV. The second day of the symposium started with the deliberation on “Data Collection Method” by Prof. Sumathy ,Vice Principal,KGNC, followed by Prof.Annie Annal,HOD, Deparment of Obstetrics and Gynecology ,KGNC presented on “Tools for measurement and its essentials” .The final presentation of the symposium was by Mrs.Geetha.C, Associate Professor ,KGNC on “Communication and Utilization of Research outcome”. The symposium came to an end with high tea.




RED RIBBON CLUB –WORLD BLOOD DONORS DAY
June, 2017

Red Ribbon Club of KGNC had participated in Awareness Rally on World Blood Donors Day 2017 on 14-06-2017 between 9.00 am to 11.30 am,with the guidance and support of our Principal Dr. Renuka.K, Students of B.Sc (N) I year accompanied by Ms.Ambig a, Tutor, had actively participated in Awareness Rally which was held in the beach near Gandhi statue.Totally 50 students were participated actively& created awareness by using placards bearing awareness slogans. Many colleges and schools were also participated. The Rally was inaugurated by Dr. Jayanthi, Project DirectorPACS at 9.00 am. The rally starts from Gandhi statue [from Gandhi statue via Bussy St, Anna Salai, Nehru St, Mission St, Bharathi Park and return to Gandhi statue. Programme was really successful and ended at 11.30 am.

MEDICAL EDUCATION UNIT
May, 2017

Department of Health Professions Education organized a lecture on “Emerging areas of educational research in health professions” which was conducted on 15.5.17. Prof. K. R. Sethuraman, Vice Chancellor,SBV deliberated on the topic in MEU hall ,first floor, MGMCRI .The session was highly interesting and motivating. The faculty rendered an active participation in the session.

Nursing Education Unit & Internal Quality Assurance Cell Jointly Organized a guest lecture on 12.05.2017 , at I - Floor, MEU, MGMCRI. The Guest Speaker Dr. A. Maria Therese, Professor, Dept. of Medical Surgical Nursing, College of Nursing, Mother Theresa Post- Graduate institute of medical Sciences, Puducherry, was invited for the lecture on “Nurses: A voice to Lead – Achieving the Sustainable development Goals (SDGS)”. She illuminated on various topics like Nurses as changing force, and the role of nurses in Sustainable development goals which bestowed good spirit and inspiration among the Faculty, Kasturbians, and the staff nurses from MGMCRI. There was a brief group discussion at the end of the session, and the session concluded with the Vote of Thanks.




REPORT ON CAREER GUIDANCE PROGRAM AND MOU SIGNING

Placement cell of KGNC organized Career Guidance Program on 5.5.17 from 3 pm to 5 pm. It’s a moment of great pride that KGNC is moving one step ahead, finding a place for our Kastubians to place their feet abroad. At 3 pm members gathered at Telepresence room, SBV , MOU was signed by Mr, Gregory Mc Caffrey, CEO, Canadian Health Care Academy, Canada and Dr. Renuka K, Dean Faculty of Nursing sciences in the presence of a team comprised of Prof. K. R Sethuraman, Vice – Chancellor, SBV, Prof. N. Ananthakrishnan Dean, AHS, SBV, Prof. A. R. Srinivasan, Registrar, SBV, Mr. Ralph Mathew, Legal adviser, SBV, Mrs. Asha Suresh Babu, GM (Admin) and few faculty members of KGNC. At 4 pm in II floor lecture hall, MGMCRI. The team members gathered and been welcomed by Mrs. Rajeswari S, Asso.Prof, Placement cell co- ordinator. Seminar was presented by Mr. Gregory Mc Caffrey, CEO, Canadian Health Care Academy, Canada on Placement Opportunities for Nurses at Canada. Mr. Henry Joseph, President, ABC study links, interacted with students and clarified their doubts regarding placement at Canada. Vote of thanks was given by Mrs. R. Elavarasi, Asst. Prof, KGNC .Program came to an end at 5 pm.




CRESCITA - AWARDING CEREMONY 2K17

CRESCITA – Awarding ceremony Part II, again a renewed joyful continuation of Crescita 2017 was held on 08.04.2017. For a decade Academic Excellence award was given to recognize the academic accomplishments of students across a wide spectrum of academic fields, literary and fine arts . Individually and collectively, the students we honor today embody our university’s mission —to make the world a better place through our ideas, our innovations, and our engagement. The ceremony began with the welcome address rendered by Dr.Renuka K, Principal, KGNC. Prof. K.R.Sethuraman, Vice Chancellor, SBV rendered his valuable presidential address and Prof. A.R. Srinivasan, Registrar, SBV felicitated the gathering. Following the felicitation Dr. Tharanikkarasu K, Controller of Examinations, Prof. & Head, Dept. of Chemistry, Pondicherry University, the chief guest of the ceremony, graced the occasion with his valuable philosophical thoughts and ideas in educational system. The ceremony concluded with the Vote of thanks proposed by Prof. M. Annie Annal, HOD, Dept. of OBG Nursing, followed by that our students gave us a wonderful glimpse of Cultural programme.




ROPORT ON NATIONAL SAFE MOTHERWOOD DAY
April, 2017

Reproductive Health Unit of Department of OBG Nursing, KGNC conducted a Showmanship on “Antenatal Care” with regard to National Safe Motherhood Day 2017 in Antenatal ward, MGMCRI, Puducherry on 19.04.2017. The programme started at 11.00 am. 30 antenatal mothers attended the programme and benefitted. B.Sc (N) IV year students actively participated and emphasized the care during antenatal period, which includes personal hygiene, diet, antenatal checkup, supplements, exercises, rest, sleep, travel. Immunizations, morning sickness and its managements. The Programme came to an end at 11.30am.Mothers doubts were clarified, Photographs were taken. Snacks given and feedback was obtained from the beneficiaries.




WORLD IMMUNIZATION WEEK
April, 2017

The Department of Child Health Nursing, KGNC commemorated “World Immunization Week- 2017, by organizing Panel Discussion on Immunization by M.Sc(N) I Year, Child Health Nursing specialty students on 3.5.17 at Paed Immunization unit , MGMCRI,. The chairperson introduced the Panel members and the discussion opened up with the Importance of administering Vaccination, the Myths the public have towards Immunization , Immunization schedule followed by Government of India ,and The need for administering Pulse Polio & Measles Rubella (MR) vaccine . All Panelists raced up with valid points, and the discussion was very fruitful. At the end, the Chairperson emphasized, the core concept ‘To Promote, Protect, Support Immunization, after which the floor was opened for discussion. Many mothers raised their Queries, especially about MR vaccines, Optional vaccines, missed doses, etc. Their Queries were answered by the Department of Child Health Nursing & by Dr. Soundararajan HOD, Department of Paediatrics, MGMCRI. Thus the event turned out to be a very useful one benefitting around 25 mothers. Feedback were collected from beneficiaries elicited that the programme was highly informative & good.




REPORT ON STATE LEVEL WORK SHOP
April, 2017

The State level workshop on “Forensic Nursing – A New Door Open To Nurses” organised by I year M.Sc. Nursing students (2016-2017 batch) was held on12th April 2017(Wednesday) with Dr. Gitanjali D, Associate Professor and HOD Department of Forensic Medicine, Government Medical College, Villupuram as the Chief Guest presided by Our Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. K.R.Sethuraman, SBV. The inaugural address was given by Vice Chancellor Prof. K.R.Sethuraman SBV. He in his address appreciated PG students for taking this initiatives and suggested that program of this kind can be organised once in six months. The workshop - An overview was presented by Dr. Renuka K Dean, Faculty of Nursing Sciences, SBV. The bundle of knowledge was compressed in a CD and was released by the Chief Guest. Prof. M.Ravishankar, Dean, MGMCRI felicitated the gathering and he emphasized that the Forensic Nursing is new to nursing field. Key note address was given by the chief guest, Dr. Gitanjali D Associate Professor and HOD Department of Forensic Medicine, Government Medical College, Villupuram. She stated that Forensic science was very interesting and challenging field & the role of nurses in this area is very vital. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Mrs. Priyalatha G, M.Sc. Nursing, I year KGNC student. The assemblage of eminent speakers in the field of Forensic Nursing across the state rendered their deliberations. By 4.30 p.m. The valedictory session commenced. The total numbers of delegates were 250. Prof. Sumathi P, HOD, Department of. Paediatric Nursing, KGNC issued the Certificates. The overall feedback was obtained through the online. Feedback was graded as excellent and very good.

CRESCITA - 2K17

The Annual Day cultural – CRESCITA 2K17 a colourful evening in the calendar of KGNC was held on 24.03.2017 in SBV ground adorned by a elegant stage of grandiosity and colorful air balloons. Mrs. Kripa Angeline A, Associate Professor, Dept. of Medical Surgical Nursing welcomed the gathering. Prof. K.R.Sethuraman, Vice Chancellor, SBV rendered his valuable presidential address. The CD of Sparklss’17, 5th issue Students magazine which was a perfect blend of skills, artistic talents and creativity of the students had a grand launch by the dignitaries on the Dias. Prof. P.sumathy the chief editor gave a glimpse of the contents in SPARKLSS which was innovative.

The college annual report of 2016 – 2017 was deliberated by our Principal, Dr.Renuka K, who highlighted the progress and milestones of KGNC which was noteworthy. With the motive of showcasing the talent of students in sports and extracurricular activities cultural , various competitions on fine arts, literary , sports & culturals were conducted for the past two weeks . The winners of the events were honored on this day with a shield and certificate by the dignitaries.The prideful moment on stage was the bagging of overall trophy by redhouse bringing lot of cheers from the gathering.the untiring efforts of the students were evident by the joy seen on the faces of the students when the Ryzentronz recieved the trophy for organizing batch.

Prof. A.R. Srinivasan, Registrar, SBV and Prof. M. Ravishankar, Dean, MGMCRI felicitated the gathering. The chief guest of the day Dr. Daisy Saran, Managing Director, Daisy Hospitals, Chennai, in her chief guest address motivated the group on the values of life. The programme concluded with the Vote of thanks which was proposed by Prof. P. Sumathy, HOD, Dept. of Child Health Nursing, which was followed by the Cultural programme. The students staged entertaining, colorful, dazzling events which brought to limelight the Kasturbians creative and artistic talents.




WORLD GLAUCOMA DAY

The Dept. of Medical Surgical Nursing took long leap in Commemorating the world Glaucoma day in union with NSS unit of Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College and the Dept. of ophthalmology at Mahatma Gandhi Medical college and research institute Pillaiyarkuppam, Puducherry in organizing the screening camp and health awareness programme on world glaucoma day on 11.03.2017 at B. Mutlur. The program was inaugurated by Mr. Natarajan, Regional manager of Gramavidial Microfinancial LTD in B. Mutlur and the camp was conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Swathi, Dr. Ashwinth, Dr. Vasanth department of ophthalmology at Mahatma Gandhi medical college and research institute, Mrs.Manopriya, Ms.Ponmani.c Faculty dept of Medical Surgical Nursing at Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College, Pillaiyarkuppam, Puducherry. Ms.Ponmani.c, Tutor, Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College gave a lucid health talk on “Glaucoma” followed by a video show.




SPORTS MEET

The Inauguration of sports meet-2017 was held on 23.02.2017.The inauguration commenced with college anthem at 3.30pm, followed by welcome address delivered by Mrs. Jayanthi. K, Asst.Prof, SNA Advisor, KGNC .The first proceeding House robe & capping ceremony for young Kasturbians of each houses was commenced by the Honorable Vice chancellor ,which was followed by Flag hoisting and March past by the students . The students from Respective Houses of Sapphire Blue, Amber Yellow, Emerald Green, Ruby Red, Amethyst Purple Zircon Brown showcased a perfect parade. Prof.K.R.Sethuraman& Dr. Renuka.K Principal declared the Sports meet open by releasing the doves .The Inauguration proceeded with the next event of Lighting of Olympic Torch ignited by the dignitaries and carried over by the Captains of 6 houses on to the torch Relay round the track..Prof.K.R.Sethuraman ,Vice –Chancellor,SBV addressed the gathering with his unique motivational speech. Ms.Nandhini.S,B.Sc(N) IV Year student ,SNA Secretary, rendered the vote of thanks. The day concluded with the National Anthem in Air.The sports events continued with various events for the next two days with full spirit and vigour.




NATIONAL BURNS AWARENESS WEEK

Department of Medical Surgical Nursing took a march in front by organizing an Instructive Video Assisted Health Talk among General Public ,Adingapattu on Prevention of Fire Accident and First Aid Management of Burns.on 28.02. 2017in commemoration of national burns awareness week . Ms. Nirmala, Tutor, Dept of Medical Surgical Nursing, sensitized the public about the Common causes of fire accident at house and community and first aid management of the burns wound until they reach nearest health care facility followed by the presentation, a video show emphasizing the value of precious time and prudent act during a fire accident were highlighted. In addition, information on how to prevent “Rescuer becoming a Victim” was also staged.




MATRIBHASHA DIWAS

Matribhasha Diwas - 2017, with “International Mother Language Day”as the theme of the year , was commemorated in KGNC on 22.02.17. an essay competition on Keeping Alive – The Mother Tongue (English & Tamil) & Magic of Multilingualism (English) was conducted at Ground Floor, KGNC, Puducherry. The day had a good number of PG & UG student participation.

Shaping young orators – Dept. of Nursing Foundation for the B.Sc (N) I year on 15.02.2017 focusing on the theme “Preparing Young Orators – Reflection on communication Building .The dignitaries on the Dias was Dr.Renuka.K,Principal of KGNC, Ms.Liza D’Cruz ,Language Expert ,T.S. Words ,Puducherry .Mrs.Josphine.M.B,Sr.Student Welfare Officer ,SBV, Mr.Stephen Raj,Language Trainer, T.S.Words, Mr.Victor Paschal, Language Trainer in Hospitality Industry. As a part of reflection of communication skill Building, various competition like Podium presentation, Just A Minute & Debate were conducted for the students .Students enthusiastically participated in the contest.





SCIENTIFIC ACADEMIC FORUM- NURSING FOUNDATION

Dept of Nursing Foundation organized Scientific Academic Forum on the theme “Nurses lead in fighting Infection” on 28.2.17. Quiz competition was conducted for the B.Sc (N) I year students on the theme. Dr.Kalaivani .R ,Asso.Prof, Dept. of. Microbiology, MGMCRI, was the Guest speaker who threw light on “Fighting Infection “ which caught the attention of the delegates. The programme came to an end with the vote of thanks.

Nursing Education Unit & Internal Quality Assurance Cell Jointly Organized a guest lecture on “Classroom Management & Strategies to Handle Problem Students” on 01.02.2017 at I Floor, MEU, MGMCRI. The Guest Speaker Dr. R. Muthumanickam, Principal, Krishnasamy College of Education for Women, Puducherry, the chief guest of the day deliberated on the classroom management strategies components, effective teaching, disruptive behavior, proactive classroom management, de-escalation strategies and effective behavior. The lecture strengthened the effective way of handling students more simply, passionately and with an attitude of indifference thereby improving our classroom management effectiveness. There was also a brief group discussion at the end of the session. The guest speaker was honored with memento.





Scientific Academic Forum

Department of Medical Surgical Nursing hosted the Scientific Academic Forum on 10.1.17. The objective of the forum was to throw light on Critical Care Nursing. The B.Sc (N) Student’s brains were conjured up by the Quiz Time which was a good drill and thrill for the students. The shovel of the forum was the guest talk on FAST HUG – Care Of Patients In Critical Care Nursing by Dr. Alai Taggu HOD, Critical Care Medicine , MGMCRI which was very informative for the students . At the end of the programme, feedback was obtained and it was graded as Excellent .





World AIDS Awareness Week 2016

Red Ribbon Club of KGNC Commemorated World AIDS Awareness Week 2016 from 1.12.2016 to 09.12.2016 by conducting various Programs. On 1.12.2016, RRC of KGNC in collaboration with Department of Community Medicine, MGMCRI ,coordinated with few competitions like a Poster competition., Slogan writing and Short video message. A Voluntary Blood Donation Camp was conducted on 2.12.2016 at Blood Bank, MGMCRI. Totally 16 volunteer students donated blood. A Public awareness program - Bicycle Rally on HIV/AIDS Awareness was conducted by 45 volunteer’s students from B.Sc (N) I, III & IV year at MGMCRI- MGMCRI (Through Kirumampakkam, Manapet, Narambai, Mullodai and Kanniyakovil). A Health talk for Transgender regarding Prevention of Venereal diseases on 4.12.2016 at SCHOD Society, Cuddalore. A video show and Interaction session for Antenatal mothers on Prevention of HIV through Parent- Child Transmission at Antenatal OPD, MGMCRI on 5.12.2016. Simultaneously 5.12.2016, Interaction and Lucky Draw Programme on AIDS Awareness for the 11thstd School Students from Dr. Ambedkar. Govt. Hr. Sec. School, Pudupalayam. On 7.12.16 a Skit titled ‘Exploring the relationship between HIV/AIDS and Alcoholism’ in Bharat Matha De- Addiction Centre, Ariyankuppam. A debate on the topic of “Media and Family Influence on Present Day Adolescents – Are they positive or negative towards prevention of HIV/AIDS?” was organized on 09.12.2016 at KGNC .The Session was moderated by Prof. Ambujam, Dept.of. DVL, MGMCRI. End of the Debate session, the Valediction Programme was conducted. All the winners and participants were issued certificates by the chief guest. Overall the programmes ended with grand success.





Webupdation-Newborn week Celebration

In commemoration of New born week, Department of Child Health Nursing, KGNC organized a series of activities from 15th -21st Nov 2016. Poem writing competition on the theme ‘New Born’ both in Tamil & English was organized for UG &PG Students. A total 32 students showcased their Poetic talents as did pen down their thoughts, and feelings about new born in a very creative and poetical way. Students exhibited their artistic ability in the form of posters on the theme ‘ New Born care’. A healthy baby contest was conducted in three categories. 0-6 months, 7 months- 1 year and 1-2 years. Children were evaluated based on a structured evaluation proforma and from each category the first place was awarded with gifts and children were honored with crown and sash ribbon. Eight consolation prizes were given to the children. Interactive session was organized at post natal ward of MGMCRI by M.Sc. Nursing I year, Dept. of Child Health Nursing specialty students. Discussion focused on breast feeding, importance of maintaining thermo regulation, Immunization, treatment of minor ailments and maintenance of good personal hygiene by mothers. It was a very interesting and interactive session and mothers found it to be very beneficial. Feedback for all programmes were collected from beneficiaries and evaluated. Overall the feedback was rated as excellent for all programmes.

The Department Of Mental Health Nursing organized Scientific and Academic Forum on the theme of “Dignity in Mental Health-Psychological First Aid for all” in I Floor Lecture Hall, KGNC , on 16.11.16. Mrs.Prabhavathy S, Asso. Prof, HOD, Department of Mental Health Nursing, KGNC threw light on the topic “Role of Nurse in Psychological First Aid”. Dr.Avudaiappan, Asst.Prof, Dept. of Psychiatry, MGMCRI gave a broad view on the topic “Dignity in Mental Health-Psychological First Aid for all”, which was a lively and informative session for the students. The forum ended with honoring the guest speaker with mememto.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecological Nursing organized Scientific and Academic Forum on 28.11.2016 focusing on the theme “Obstetrical Care Of Malpresentation And Malposition”. A quiz programme was conducted in this regard. B.Sc. (N) IV year students enthusiastically participated and won the prizes. Dr. L. Ashwini Vishalakshi, MS (OBG), DGO, Assistant Professor, Dept of OBG, MGMCRI was the guest speaker of the day. She gave an enlightening talk on “Obstetrical Care Of Malpresentation And Malposition” which gathered the attention of the student folk.





Children’s Day

Children’s Day celebration organized by the Department of Child Health Nursing, kick started with a colorful start in the Paediatric Medical Ward on 14.11.16. Prof. D. Gunasekaran, Department of Paediatrics, RMO, DMS, MGMC&RI, Faculty members of KGNC and Doctors from Paediatric Department made their gracious presence. A skit on “Prevention and Management of Dengue” was enacted by III Year B.Sc. Nursing Students. The students transformed themselves as Mosquitoes, and in a very humorous way conveyed the causes, mode of transmission, source of breeding, clinical manifestations, management and prevention. Followed by this, Cinematic songs with the lyrics focusing on personal hygiene were staged, in the form of dance. It enthralled the entire audience. Around 35 parents with their children attended the programme, and they thoroughly enjoyed both the programmes, and also cleared all their doubts. Thus, Children’s Day celebration ended up with great joy and happiness. Feedback was collected from the parents and evaluated. 95 % of the parents elicited that the programme was highly, informative, interesting and excellent and one parent stated that, she has never seen a program of this kind that was very enjoyable as well informative.

In today’s changing climate, oncology nurses work much more closely with a diverse team of healthcare professionals and having an intimate knowledge of cancer and the treatment process has become even more important. With this objective of the Department Medical Surgical Nursing took a long leap to join hands with its prideful sponsorship from Indian Council Medical Research (ICMR) to organize the 7th National Conference on Breaking Bad News to Rehabilitation “Oncology Nursing” – Exploring New Horizons on 12.10.16 at Ground Floor Lecture Hall, MGMCRI.

The inaugural session commenced with a warm welcome accorded by Mrs.Kripa Angeline A, Associate Professor KGNC. Our honorable Vice-Chancellor, SBV, Prof. K. R. Sethuraman, rendered the Presidential Address followed by Dr. Renuka . K Principal KGNC, who gave a brief note on the need of the theme and conference logo. Dr. K.S. Reddy, Radiation Oncologist, MGMCRI, delivered the key note address.The Chief Guest, Ms. Radha saini, Fellow, UICC GENEVA released the conference souvenir and delivered the inaugural address. WORLD HEART DAY

In commemoration of World heart day, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing took a new venture this year to create awareness among IT professionals working in Lenovo Company. The objective of the program was to spread awareness and to sensitize the middle level managers with the growing burden of heart disease and the individuals role in prevention, as IT professional are at high risk group of developing cardiovascular diseases. Mrs.Kripa Angeline Associate Professor accompanied by 3 team members elucidated on four P’s of heart care- protect, promote, power and prevent. The session was followed by an interactive where all the queries were clarified by Mrs.Kripa Angeline.A. The session turned out to be informative and useful for everyone with the feedback being overwhelmingly positive from the participants.




World suicide prevention day

In commemoration of World Suicide Prevention Day, Dept. of Mental Health Nursing, KGNC organized a Guest Lecture on the theme “Connect, Communicate and Care” by Mr. I. Jegan, Chief Executive Officer, Win Your Weakness Academy, Bangalore at Ground Floor Lecture Hall, MGMCRI College Block, SBV Campus, Puducherry on 08.09.2016. The Guest Lecture started at 10.00 am based on the objective, to create awareness among the students on the value of life, to motivate the younger generation towards the personal, professional and societal growth and to prevent the ideation of self - harming through strong motivation. In between the session fun games were conducted to encourage the students. In the afternoon session students were given time to confess and come out of their fraudulent behaviors and attitude. Students were made to cry out and leave their negatives and asserted optimistic thoughts. Students were given an open forum to express their feelings, and the feedback about the session was obtained. Many came out with their problems and group counseling was given. The programme came to an end with National Anthem specially composed by the Blind Children at His Home and concluded with high tea at 6 pm.

Nursing Education Unit & Internal Quality Assurance Cell Jointly Organized a Workshop on “Problem Based Questioning” which was conducted on 28.09.2016 between 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm, at Board Room I - Floor, Administrative Block, SBV. The Resource Speaker Prof.K. R. Sethuraman, Vice- Chancellor, SBV and Prof. B. V. Adkoli, Head of MEU, SBV, were honored by Dr. Renuka. K Principal of KGNC. Our Vice - Chancellor started his deliberation on “Problem Based Questioning”. In his presentation he emphasized the importance of Rule of Thumb involved in PBQ and how to find out the PBQ types, principles, methods of evaluating PBQ. Group task were assigned on analysis of PBQs model questions. Faculty members presented the evaluative report on the model problem based questions. The programme winded up with the vote of thanks and feedback from faculty.

The highlights of this forum comprised of a quiz program for III year and IV year B.Sc Nursing students, which was mind blowing and interesting. Following this, there was an impressive session by Dr.Srinivasa Ragavan, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Paediatrics, MGMCRI, who elaborated on Developmental Assessment of Children, Growth Chart, Developmental Scales for Assessing Children, which was informative and beneficial for the participants.

Induction programme for XIV Batch B.Sc Nursing, VIII Batch P.B.B.Sc &M.Sc Nursing was conducted on 26.08.2016. The aim of the programme was to provide a bird’s eye view of various dimensions of nursing and to acquaint them with the systems and proceedings of the college and to groom, nurture the young budding nursing students to mould in the days to come. The inauguration began with Prayer Song at 9.30am. Dr.A.R.Srinivasan, Registrar, SBV, presided over the function. Dr.Renuka.K, Principal highlighted on the topic “- KGNC-Right place for global Development”.
The sessions that followed inauguration were addressed by Prof.P.Sumathy, HOD, Department of Child Health Nursing, KGNC, Mrs.Kripa Angeline .An Associate Professor,KGNC, Mrs.Mano Priya.V, Asst.Professor,KGNC, Who highlighted on the topics, Outline about our institution, “Your Helping Desk” - orientation to Mentors & Committees, and “Professional Etiquettes”. B.Sc Nursing II year students depicted a Video Show on “Zero Tolerances of Ragging at KGNC. Our honorable Vice Chancellor, Prof.K.R.Sethuraman, SBV, delivered the Chief Guest address. With this good start, a one-week Induction programme was conducted from 26.08.16 to 3.09.16. Orientation and visit to KGNC, Medical college & Hospital were given in four batches respectively. Mrs.Jayanthi Asst.Professor, Mental Health Nursing Had a discussion regarding “Creating Positive Attitude towards Nursing” to the students on 29.08.16 Dr.Uma, Department of Genetics & Dr.Ambujam, Department of Dermatology has given a motivational speech about “Building Self-Confidence” and regional language (Malayalam & Telugu) classes were taken KGNC faculty.

National Nutrition week an event of importance was observed from 1-7th September 2016. KGNC took this event in hand to create awareness regarding value of essential nutrients and impact on junk foods. This programme had a first move by joining hands with Puduvai Vaani FM 107.8. Ms Mary Catherin D.E III year B.Sc(N) student gave a health talk on essential health tips which was aired on 02.09.16 2.00 pm. The second focus was on school going children in Achariya Bala Siksha Mandir Schoo,l Fishing harbor road, Thengaithittu, wherein our II year B.Sc (N) students created an awareness based on the topic “Impact of Junk Food” for middle school children on 03.09.16. As a final move, the IV year B.Sc (N) Students gave a health talk on value of essential nutrients for patients gathered in MRD, MGMCRI on 06.09.16


THE AZADI -70 CELEBRATION

As per the directives of UGC , Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College (KGNC), celebrated Azadi 70 (Independence 70) Yaad Karo Kurbani by organising a slogan writing competition on the theme ‘Quit terrorism Pervade Patriotism’ both in Tamil/English on 20.08.2016 timing at venue 9.30 am in the Library of KGNC. With great zeal and interest a total of 32 students took part in the competition. Each participant stated 5 slogans. The best slogans of 3 participants were identified. The jury consists of Mrs. A. Kripa Angeline, Asso. Prof. KGNC and Mrs. Geetha. C, Asso. Prof. KGNC. A mass singing of the National Anthem was organized on 23 rd August 2016, at 11 AM. All students assembled in the ground floor of KGNC, raised their voices, to sing our National Anthem. This programme had made the students to imbibe values such as self-discipline, responsibility and patriotism.

NSS volunteers of Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College unit commemorated International youth day on 12.08.16. The NSS unit of KGNC initiated a massive tree planting programme with the saplings received from the forest department, Puducherry in the adopted villages of MGMCRI. The tree planting ceremony was inaugurated by Rev.Fr.Zesu Nazaren, Parish priest, Our Lady of health Church, Pillayarkuppam and Dr.Renuka K, Principal, KGNC in the church campus and volunteers geared up their green mission by planting sapling in Pillayarkuppam village and in CN palayam, village and Government school campus. The core concept to promote, protect and support the working and non working women towards breast feeding was highly emphasized. All sessions were highly informative and interactive. The myths and doubts of the mothers regarding breast feeding were removed, and they gained adequate knowledge regarding the various aspect of breast feeding.

International Drug Abuse Day was celebrated on 25.06.16 between 9am -1pm at Indira Gandhi Square to New Bus Stand, Puducherry. The Department of Mental Health Nursing, KGNC joined hands with Bharatha Matha Deaddiction Centre. The day was made eventful by conducting the rally.

The event commenced with a grand welcome by Mr. Gopal Pillai, Chairman, Mother Trust, Bharatha Matha Deaddiction Centre, Puducherry. The Honourable Chief Minister, Thiru. V. Narayanaswamy, Thiru. Kandhaswamy and Thiru. Siva, MLA graced the occasion.

Rally was flagged by our honourable Chief Minister Thiru. V. Narayanaswamy, of Puducherry. Under the guidance of the faculty members, M.Sc (N) II year and B.Sc (N) III year students processed the rally using theme based placards, face paintings, pamphlet distribution and mike announcements. from IG square, to new bus stand Puducherry. Faculty members and students from various colleges of nursing in Puducherry also participated in the rally. Our students actively participated and won prizes in various competitions like Essay, Elocution and Painting. Prizes for the students were distributed by Thiru. Siva, MLA (Orleanpet), Puducherry.

A workshop on mind mapping for SNACS (Students Needing Additional Curricular Support) was organized for the B.Sc Nursing I & II Year students on 24.06.2016 between 9.00am to 4.00 pm in MEU, MGMCRI. Principal of KGNC Dr.Renuka.K rendered the felicitation address. Dr. Stephenraj. P, Institute of Language and Culture Studies, Royal University of Bhutan was the Guest Speaker of the day who highlighted on the importance of “Mind Mapping for SNACS”. Mrs.Rama Sr.Student Welfare Officer, SBV also felicitated the gathering.

As a part of the Mind Mapping Dr. Stephenraj. P deliberated mind mapping techniques and conducted various activities like small group discussion (5 Nos in a group), drawing Mind Mapping & writing test was conducted for improving the concentration of the students. Students performed all the activities very enthusiastically. Oral feedback was obtained from the students. They found it to be highly beneficial and they thanked for the opportunity provided. They said that it helped them to erase their fears out of their mind and they gained confidence to face the forthcoming university exams.

The programme started with an extempore for III year B.Sc (N) on the topics focusing the theme. The shovel of the forum was the guest talk on the topic “Blood Connects Us All” Guest Speaker: Dr.S.Jayanthi ,Project Director Pondicherry AIDS Control Society Puducherry , who threw a light on voluntary blood donation. At the end of the session, certificates were distributed to the prize winners.

NATIONAL SAFE MOTHERHOOD DAY CELEBRATION

The Reproductive Health Unit of Department of OBG Nursing, conducted a Health education programme on “Postnatal care” with regard to National Safe motherhood Day Celebration in Antenatal & Postnatal wards of MGMC & RI, Puducherry on 11.04.2016. The programme had a good start with postnatal mothers as beneficiaries. Ms.Jayapradha.S, M.Sc (N) II yr student gave a lucid health talk on various perspectives of care of post natal mothers. The session turned out to be very informative for the beneficiaries which was evident from feedback obtained.


INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION

8th March is internationally celebrated as the “International Women’s Day”. The Reproductive Health Unit of Department of OBG Nursing, KGNC observed and celebrated International Women’s Day on 10.3.16 at Seliamedu pet. The students enacted a skit based on Gender Equality which portrayed the importance of gender equality and rights of women in the society. The event reached all the corners of Seliamedu.

The Department of Child Health Nursing Organised Scientific and Academic Forum on 31-03-2016 at Ground floor Lecture hall. The Scientific session started with a Quiz competition on Diabetes Milletus which was conducted for the B.Sc (N) III year students followed by a Guest Lecture given by Dr. S. SRINIVASAN, Sr. Prof, Dept of Pediatrics, MGMCRI based on the theme “JUVENILE DIABETES MILLETUS – HALT THE RISE; BEAT DIABETES” . At the end of the session certificates were distributed to the prize winners of the Quiz Competition.


World TB Day

In Commemoration of World Tuberculosis day, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing in unison with Sashun Strides organized awareness programme on the theme “Unite to end TB” on 31.3.16. Ms. Nirmala.S, Lecturer gave a video assisted health talk on “TUBERCULOSIS ” followed by an entertaining, informative Dolly show by II year B.Sc Nursing Students, which received a standing ovation and appreciation from the workers. This opportunity was well utilized by the workers to obliterate the myths and misconceptions about TB. The Effectiveness of the programme was evident by the on spot oral and written feedback from all the workers which rated the programme as good and post test indicates p value <0.001 which is highly significant implicating the effect of up dated information on TB.

The Sparklss- 16 Students magazine which was a confluenceof ideas, a perfect blend of the arts, the skills and creatitvity , was released by the dignitaries on the dias which was followed by the Cultral programme which brought to limelight the Kasturbians creative and artistic talents.


INAUGURATION OF SPORTS MEET

The inauguration of Sports Meet - 2016 was held on 11.03.2016 one of the most awaited event in KGNC calendar. The sports day inauguration had, Prof.K.R.Sethuraman, Vice Chancellor, SBV as the chief guest who gave the House robe & cap for young kasturbians of each houses as a first venture. The evening proceeded with flag hoisting and parade by the students under the houses namely Sapphire Blue, Amber Yellow, Emerald Green, Ruby Red,Amethyst Purple and Zircon Brown. Prof.K.R.Sethuraman declared the sports meet open followed by the Lighting of Olympic Torch. The field was open for track events of the day.

Mass cooking demonstration on Protein rich diet by IV year Nursing students with the theme of prevention and control of malnutrition on 20.1.16 in Pillaiyarkuppam on target group of mothers of under-five children.

School health programme on Dental care and Hygiene on the theme –Ever lasting teeth to have an everlasting smile on 29.1.16 at Government primary school, Seliamedu for the school children.

World cancer day an awareness program on the theme prevention and treatment modalities of cancer, presented in the form of mime show on 4.2.16 at City health centre, Pillaithottam.

World leprosy day – Integrated health camp was conducted on 8.2.16 for school children at Government primary school, Gunamangalam. Screening for Leprosy was carried for the school students, followed by, a “Role Play” was organized on the theme “Prevention And Control Of Leprosy”

Integrated health camp was conducted for general health and dental health on 16.2.16 for school children at Government primary school, Gunamangalam.

Mass cooking demonstration was organized based on the concept “Diet Fit For Diabetes Milletus And Hypertension” on 25.2.16 at Pillaithottam.

World ebola virus day –an awareness program was organized based on the theme –Prevention Of Ebola Infection on 9.3.16 at Dr .Ambethkar Higher Secondary School, Kirumapakkam.

WORLD DISABLED DAY –In commemoration of WORLD DISABLED DAY, Department of Community Health Nursing, KGNC, organized an awareness programme to the general public regarding Special attention for empowerment on Special Children, at Seliamedu on 30-03-2016. A Role Play was enacted based on the concept of “ Important Education and empowerment skill for special children”.

NEW YEAR MEDICAL CAMP - NSS volunteers of Kasturba Gandhi Nursing college and Department of Community Medicine, MGMC&RI, organized a Medical Camp on 01.01.16 at Panchavadi Temple.
SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME - NSS volunteers of Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College organized a School Health Programme in Govt.Higher Secondary School,Karayamputhur.INTENSIFIED PULSE POLIO IMMUNIZATION CAMPAIGN - 25 volunteers of Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College NSS -unit actively took part in the Pulse Polio Immunization campaign phase-I on 17.01.16 and in phase II on 21.2.16 at Pillayarkuppam, Pillayarkuppam Pet,Panithittu,Narambai, Manapet, Moorthikuppam, Puthukuppam, Koravalimedu,Kanniakoil, Kattukuppam and Kirumampakkam.
NATIONAL VOTER’S DAY- National Voter’s day celebration was organized by Election Department of Puducherry in order to create awareness for the first time voters on 24.01.16. The Election Department arranged for various competitions such as Essay writing, slogan writing,Quiz, Elocution, Singing, Dance, Rangoli, Short film, Mobile application etc. KGNC students took active participation and secured fourth place in Tamil elocution and singing competition.Prizes were distributed at the voter’s Fest held on 24.01.16.
REPUBLIC DAY- NSS volunteers of SBV University celebrated 67th Republic day of our Nation on 26.01.16 at, MGMC&RI campus.


Matribasha Diwas 2016

In commemoration of Matribasha Diwas 2016, The Literary Club of KGNC buzzed with a cluster of activities to highlight the linguistic diversity of our country, to facilitate using one’ s mother tongue better, learning others mother tongue faster and to create a congenial atmosphere for appreciating and encouraging all Indian languages. Around 50 to 60 students participated in Essay English, and Essay Tamil, 9 students participated in English & Tamil Elocution. Students also participated in Skit competition which was conducted in English, Tamil, Malayalam & Hindi. Debate & painting competitions were also conducted and prizes were awarded to the winners.

World cancer day

In Commemoration of World cancer day, Department of Medical Surgical Nursing in unison with Rajiv Gandhi college of Engineering and Technology organized awareness programme on resoluting the queries on cancer. The program was inaugurated by the dignitaries on the dais, Prof.Dr.Maria Jayaprakash,Principal RGCET, Prof.Dr.K.Iyyapan,Vice-Principal, Mrs.Kripa Angeline Asso.Prof,KGNC, Dr.Dooslil Mercy Bai, HOD Dept of Bio-Medical Engineering and Mr.Murugan, Asst.Prof, Dept of Bio-Medical Engineering.Principal and vice principal of RGCET threw light on importance of the awareness programme for the Bio-Medical Engineering students. Mrs.Kripa Angeline unfolded the theme of the year“we can I can” and gave a capsule talk on it. Ms.Nandhini.M, Lecturer gave a lucid talk on “Prevention of cancer” followed by a video show. “I hear I forget I see I remember”. To emphasize the value of the quote a visual treat in the form of tablo which depicted all aspects of cancer was presented by the III yr B.Sc Nursing students of KGNC which received a loud of applause and appreciation from the delegates. The heart of the day was the brainstorming interactive session where the queries of the delegates were sorted out.


Youth Red Cross Unit

The Youth Red Cross (YRC) unit of Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College (KGNC) Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth Deemed University was inaugurated on 05.02.2016 at 9.00 am by the Chief Guest Dr. K.V. Raman, Secretary Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) & Director of Health & Family Welfare, Govt of Puducherry. Dr. K. Renuka, Principal of KGNC gave a warm welcome to the august gathering.
The event was presided by the Honorable Vice Chancellor of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Prof. K .R. Sethuraman. He in his address motivated the youth to be more service minded and have civic sense of responsibility. Prof. Dr. V. Gopal, Chairman Managing Committee (IRCS) gave a brief about the Youth Red Cross and inspired the youth to have more commitment for humanitarian service. The student volunteers took up the oath, which was administered by Dr. K.V. Raman. He in his inaugural address congratulated the institute for this maiden initiative and kindled the spirit of dedication in the youth’s mind. Mr. Siva Ramachandran, Member, Managing Committee, IRCS, beautified the dias.

Uma, Asso.Prof, Dept of Anatomy, Dr. Kingsly, Institute of Language And Culture Studies, Royal University of Bhutan, evaluated the various competitions. Lamp Lighting Ceremony of KGNC

The Lamp Lighting Ceremony of KGNC for the XIII batch B.Sc. (N) students had held on 06.01.2016 at MGMCRI campus. The programme commenced with the procession by dignitaries and the budding nightingales. Ms.Anbu.M, Lecturer, KGNC, mastered the ceremony. Dr.K.Renuka, Principal, KGNC welcomed the august audience. The hall illumined with the kuthuvillaku lit by Prof.K.R.Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, SBV, Dr.K.Renuka, Principal, KGNC, Dr.Nirmal Coumare.V, Medical Superintendent, MGMCRI, Mrs. Amir Alikhan Asmath, Nursing Superintendent, MGMCRI, Prof .M.J.Kumari, Principal, I/C-College Of Nursing, JIPMER. The motivational presidential address was delivered by Prof.K.R.Sethuraman, Vice Chancellor. Mrs.Nandhini.M, Lecturer, KGNC highlighted the significance of lamp lighting through her vivid presentation. The compassionate leaders of nursing passed the light from the Nightingale’s lamp to the budding nurses. The programme traversed further by a prayer and dedication hymn sung by the students. Mrs.Amir Alikhan Asmath fore-worded the pledge and the students recited it. Dr.V.NirmalCoumare delivered the special message. The chief guest address was given Prof.M.J.Kumari and Prof.P.Sumathy rendered the Vote of thanks.


AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON DIABETES

The Dept of Community Health Nursing, in unison with Department of General Medicine, MGMC&RI conducted a Diabetes Awareness Programme on 31-12-2015 in MGMC&RI MRD . Dr. Jaisingh, HOD, General Medicine inaugurated the day. The final year B.Sc (N) students enacted a ROLE PLAY on “Prevention And Control Of Diabetes” to bring awareness on diabetic control among the gathered public and out-patients on the day.

SNA- FLOOD RELIEF INITIATIVES

Student Nurses Association- KGNC had organized “Flood Relief Fund Distribution Programme” for the students of KGNC who were affected by flood. Mr. Srinivasan. M, Vice-President, SNA welcomed the gathering, Prof. Dr. Renuka. K, Principal, President, SNA, KGNC, highlighted about the contribution of student volunteers in helping the victims of flood & applauded the students for their noble gesture.
Followed by that, the fund was distributed to the parents of the affected families who expressed their gratitude towards the end. Ms. Maheswari. V, Cultural Secretary, SNA, KGNC delivered the gratitude note.


“Environmental Sanitation”
December 2015

Dept of Community Health Nursing arranged for a street play titled “Environmental Sanitation” at Adingapettu on 18-12-2015 . The theatre group, comprising final year B.Sc (N) students performed the street play to highlight the various forms of environmental hazards (provision of safe water, open field defecation & poor sanitation and the need for good environmental sanitation). The group leader acted as a moderator and their Sishiyas clarified their doubts through folk dance. The audience enjoyed and appreciated the performance and voluntarily pledged to create a positive attitude among the public regarding environmental sanitation.

The Dept of Mental Health Nursing organized Scientific and Academic Forum on the Theme “Mental Health Issues of Millennium students”. Dr.Sunayana Choudry, Asst.Prof clinical Psychologist, Department of Psychiatry,MGMCRI deliberated on “Mental Health and Well Being of Nursing Students” ,followed by the guest talk on “Overcoming emotional Disturbances of Students by Mrs.Rama, Student counselor, MGMCRI which gathered the attention of the student folk.


Workshop on Managing Dialysis Unit – Nurses’Role

KGNC- IQAC unit and Department of Medical Surgical Nursing organized a workshop on Managing Dialysis Unit – Nurses’Role on 29th December 2015 targetting the staff nurses and student nurses of KGNC and MGMC&RI.The program was inaugurated by Dr.Renuka.K, Principal, KGNC and the dignitaries.Dr,Hemachandar HOD, Dept.of Nephrology MGMC&RI, gave a broad overview on basics of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis which was an eye opening session for the delegates. Mrs.Geetha.S,Clinical Head,Davita, Nephrolife care,Chennai gave a lucid talk on Equipments Used In Dialysis. Skill session was moderated by Mr. Vasanth Emannuel. D, followed by the team from KGNC -Mrs.Kripa Angeline .A,Associate professor, Mrs.Nandhini.M, Lecturer, and the team from Davita Nephrolife care who also mobilized the equipments of dialysis unit, focusing on dialyser & dialysis solution, vascular access device, dialysis machine, peritoneal dialysis and pre and post Dialysis care. The skill session was a brainstorming and skill-training session for the beneficiaries which was evident through the feedback and post test score.


WORLD AIDS AWARENESS WEEK

Red Ribbon Club of KGNC with high spirits Commemorated World AIDS Awareness Week 2015 from 25.11.15 to 9.12.15 short listing various Programs. To Start with RRC Volunteers of KGNC participated in skit competition organized by Pondicherry AIDS Control Society on 25.11.15 at NRHM Hall, Puducherry. KGNC to its pride bagged the Second Prize with the Cash award of Rs.4000 . Secondly our GFATM trainers Mr.Vijayaraj.R & Ms.Ruma shanthini.K conducted an Interactive session on AIDS awareness for 1st year B.E students in Ganesh engineering college on 27.11.15. In addition our M.Sc(N) II year students also enlightened the group through an Video show on HIV/AIDS. Next RRC focused its attention on the general public and the risk group ie transgender by conducting a Mini Marathon Race at Beach road, Puducherry on 29.11.15. Simultaneously a health talk on “Preventive Measures on Common Diseases & Importance of Healthy Diet” was given by Mrs.P.Rajalakshmi, Lecturer in Nutrition & RRC volunteers at SCHOD Society, Pudupalayam, Cuddalore. Again on 8.12.15 a rally was conducted by B.Sc (N) IV year on awareness on HIV/AIDS at Ariyankuppam followed by flash mob on HIV/AIDS at Ariyankuppam, Nonankuppam, Veerampatnam. To conclude A Puppet Show was played on “Awareness on HIV/AIDS among Adolescents” and “Awareness on Adolescents health ” for 11th and 7th standard students in Achariya Siksha Mandir Hr.Sec.School, Puducherry on 09.12.15


Special Health Camp – Disaster (Flood)

Kgnc always has its societal consciousness ! The Department Of Community Health Nursing,KGNC with the help of the Department of Dermatology, MGMC&RI organized a Special Health Camp in one of the flood devastated area Adingapet.
The health camp was conducted on 10/11/15 based on the health survey, which was carried earlier in the same area. The IV year B.Sc Nursing students were involved in various activities like assessment of patients, distribution of drugs, health education and referral services.More than 60 flood victims were treated in this health camp. The team rendered free health check up and free drug distribution to the beneficiaries.


Scientific Academic Forum -2015

Department of Medical Surgical Nursing hosted the Scientific Academic Forum on 31.11.15, in commemoration of World Diabetes Day. The objective of the forum was to throw light on ‘Healthy Living Starts At Breakfast’- Theme of the year which was enlightened by Mrs.Manopriya as a good start.
The B.Sc (N) Student’s brains were conjured up by the Quiz Time which was a good drill and thrill for the delegates too. The shovel of the forum was the guest talk on ‘Therapy for Type II Diabetes Mellitus’ by Dr. H.Rakesh, Consultant Diabetologist, Dr.Mohan’s Diabetic Center which was very informative.

World Diabetes Day 2015

In commemoration of ‘World Diabetes Day 2015’, Directorate of Health and Family Welfare Services, Govt. of Puducherry in association with Novo Nordisk Education Foundation (NNEF), together organized the World Diabetes Day awareness programme to address the growing burden of Diabetes and other Non-Communicable diseases to the general public on 8-11-2015 at Kamban Kalaiarangam.
The health professionals from various medical and nursing colleges in Puducherry participated in the programme. Around 50 Nursing Students from KGNC participated in the programme. A booklet ‘A to Z of Diabetes’ and caps were given to all the participants. Dr. A.K. Doss delivered a speech on growing burden of Diabetes and the importance of physical exercises to control Diabetes. Dr. A.K. Doss forewarded the oath and it was recited by the students. Dr. K.V. Raman, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services, addressed the gathering and elaborated on the topic Diabetes. Finally, the programme came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr. A.K. Doss, Endocrinologist, PIMS at 11.30 am

In Commemoration of World Diabetic day Department of Community Health Nursing organized a Human Puppet Show in Pillaiyarkuppam on 03.11.15 by B.Sc IV year and II year nursing students.The Human Puppet Show, covered various aspects like causes, risk factors, complication, treatment modality, prevention and control measures of diabetes milletus. The public showed keen to watch the puppet show and raised many queries which were clarified by faculty members and students.

"New Born Week" celebrated by Department of Child Health Nursing

In Commemoration of new born week the Department of Child Health Nursing organized Health Talk, Poster and Elocution Competition for the B. Sc (N) students from 19/11/15 –21/11/15. The Health talk by IV B. Sc (N) students, to the Post Natal Mothers (20 nos) covered all Aspects of New Born Care. The talk evolved a good response from the audience, and the queries were answered. On the second day (20/11/15), 12 students exhibited their talents in the form of posters, on the theme ‘Key Elements of New Born Care’. The essentials of New Born Care were beautifully sketched out and this was evaluated by Dr. A.D. Edith Bernadette Jasmine,Asst. Prof of Pediatrics & Prof. M. Annie Annal, Dept of OBG Nursing, KGNC. The best posters were awarded.
On the final day (21/11/15) an elocution competition on the theme ‘Quality improvement by Data Keeping’ was organized, and 11 students gave an eloquent speech. They were judged by Dr. R. Shobana, Asst. Prof, Dept. of Physiology, MGMCRI & Prof. P. Sumathy, HOD, Dept of Child Health Nursing, KGNC. The students were appreciated for their enthusiastic participation and commitment.

NSS Activity
October 2015

The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and snow rescue centre, Himachal Pradesh organized an adventure camp for NSS volunteers across the nation. KGNC NSS unit rightly utilized this opportunity provided through state NSS cell Puducherry to equip its volunteers in all dimensions to fulfill their social responsibilities. The strong motivation of Principal brought forth 6 Volunteers(4 Girls and 2 boys) and NSS unit programme officer(Ms.Elavarasi.R) to participate in the camp from October 15th to 24th 2015 at Himachal Pradesh.

The unit underwent training on adventure activities such as Natural mountain climbing, Artificial mountain climbing, river crossing, rappelling, trekking of 66 kilometers in the deep forest of Himachal Pradesh, tent building etc., The highlight of this camp was reaching the higher altitude of 10,300 mt feet in Himalayan mountain by the team.This camp provided ample opportunity to strengthen the skills and boost the confidence of the NSS volunteers to carry out the rescue operations for the public to any extent possible in times of need.

Ms.Nandhini,B.Sc (N),II Year student of KGNC had Participated in the Painting Competition on the theme “Importance of Blood Donation” organized by Pondicherry AIDS control society, on National Voluntary Blood Donation day held on 28th October 2015.
She secured II place with cash award (Rs.2500) from Our Honorable Chief Minister Thiru.N.Rangasamy.

World Mental Health Day – 2015

KGNC - Mental Health Nursing Department joined hands with Government of Puducherry, organized a mental health awareness rally and orientation programme on the theme “Dignity of Mental Health” with a view to create mental health awareness in Bahour community on 09.10.2015. Rally started by 9.30am from Bahour Panchayat Office to Kamala Nehru Marriage Hall. Students captivated the attention of public by narrating mental health slogans and also by holding placards. Followed by, mental health orientation programme took place in Kamala Nehru marriage hall. The chief guest of the day Sri.T.Thiyagarajan, Hon.Minister for Electricity and Education, addressed the gathering and thanked the organizing team for their effort. Dr.Abu Bucker, Psychiatrist, Dept of Psychiatry, MGMC&RI threw light of knowledge on mental health and Dr.Arul varman, Asst Professor, Dept of Psychiatry, IGMC&RI delivered a speech on dignity of mental health. Students from KGNC acted a mind blowing role play on the theme “Dignity of Mental Health”. Students from various colleges staged mime and role plays in bringing up the dignity of mentally ill patients. Programme came to an end by 1.00pm with vote of thanks.

NATIONAL SEMINAR ON PAEDIATRIC ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCIES

The National Seminar on Paediatric Environmental Emergencies organized by the Department of Child Health Nursing on 07/10/2015 had Dr. A. Helen M Perdita, Principal Apollo College of Nursing, Madurai as the Chief Guest.The inaugural session commenced with the College Anthem by 9.50 a.m and a warm welcome was accorded by Mrs C. Geetha. Assoc. Prof. Dept. of Child Health Nursing, KGNC. Honorable Vice Chancellor of SBV, Prof. K.R Sethuraman presided over the function and rendered the Presidential address. Prof Mrs. Sumathy.P the Organising Secretary unfolded the theme of the seminar, followed by The Principal of KGNC Dr. K. Renuka felicitating the august gathering.The scientific deliberations were released in the form of a CD. The chief guest in her address highlighted the importance of creating a safe environment where parents played a prime role. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs.S. Rajeswari Assoc. Prof. Dept. of Child Health Nursing, KGNC.

The deliberations focused on Environmental Childhood Emergencies viz., falls, burns,poisonings,drowning,bites and stings, and foreign body obstructions, where it has emerged as a priority recently in the Global agenda due to the rising trend of morbidity and mortality.A galaxy of intellectuals was chosen as Resource Persons and their presentations with live examples sought the complete attention of the delegates.The remarks by the Observer Mrs. E. Chandralekha, Assoc. Prof. deputed by the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council,Chennai stated that it was a good initiative and well organized. All participants were distributed with certificates and the programme culminated by 4.30 p.m


SCIENTIFIC AND ACADEMIC FORUM- CHILD HEALTH NURSING DEPARTMENT

The scientific and Academic Forum conducted by the Department of Child Health Nursing held on 28.09.15 focused on congenital Anomalies of the Newborn.The highlights of this Forum comprised of a Quiz Programme for Final Year B.Sc (N) Students which was mind blowing and interesting.Following this, there was an impressive session by Dr. Prathana Das, Asst Prof, Department of Paediatrics, MGMC&RI, Who elaborated on the risk factors, classification, management and preventive aspects of congenital anomalies. Two Final Year B.Sc(N) students presented case reports on Atrial Septal Defects and Haemophilia which was informative and beneficial for the participants.

THERAPEUTIC DIET

National nutritional week an event of great importance is observed from 1.9.2015-7.9.2015. This year KGNC took this venture in hand to create awareness regarding balanced diet and healthy eating. The programme had a good start with a cookery competition on Therapeutic Diet on 1.9.2015. The second focus was on Antenatal Mothers in PHC, Kirumapakkam. Where in an elaborate health talk on healthy mothers for healthy babies was rendered to the beneficiaries on 2.9.2015. The second year B.Sc nursing students showcased a palatable cooking demonstration for mothers of Pre - Schooler on Nutritious lunch at Seliamedu government primary school on 3.9.2015 .To inculcate the individual responsibility of self-health among the youngsters, JAM (Just A Minute ) was conducted for 1st year B.Sc Nursing students on “Junk Foods”, on 5.09.2015. To explore the existing knowledge among the 2nd year B.Sc Nursing students, a quiz competition was conducted on the theme of “Micronutrient Deficiency” on 7.09.2015. This one week campaign was concluded with the valedictory programme on 8.09.2015. Dr. Reeta Asst. Prof. Department of Biochemistry, Special invitee of the programme and Principal of KGNC complimented the winners and participants with the certificates.

Induction programme for XIII Batch B.Sc Nursing, VII Batch P.B.B.Sc & M.Sc Nursing was conducted on 24.08.2015. The aim of the programme was to provide a birds eye view about various dimensions of nursing and the career opportunities for the students and to acquaint them with the systems and proceedings of the college. The programme started with an introductory address to both parents and Students . Dr.A.R.Srinivasan, Registrar, SBVpresided over the function Dr.Renuka.K, Principal gave an inspiring talk on “KGNC- A Nurturing Environment to Excel”.The programme proceeded with the following speakers Prof.P.Sumathy, HOD, Department of Child Health Nursing, Prof.Annie Annal. M, HOD Department of OBG,Mrs.Poongodi.V, Lecturer, Mr.S.Dhandapani, Vice - President, SNA who threw light on Outline view about the institution, Code of behaviors, Facilitating facilities of the college, Your Helping Desk - Orientation to Mentors & Committees respectively. B.Sc Nursing II year students depicted a Video Show on “Zero Tolerances of Ragging at KGNC”. Honorable Vice Chancellor, SBV, Prof.K.R.Sethuraman delivered the valuable chief guest address. With this good start the five days Induction program was successfully organized in 4 slots for one week from 24.08.15 to 29.08.15. Orientation and visit to KGNC, Medical college & Hospital were given to the four batches. Mrs. Rama, Student Counsellor, SBV has given counseling regarding “Creating Positive Attitude towards Nursing” to all the students. Dr.S.S.Rajasekar, HOD, Department of Anatomy gave a motivational speech on “Building Self Confidence”. The freshers were very reciprocative and showcased a positive attitude towards the nursing profession in KGNC.

REPORT ON THE WORLD BREAST FEEDING WEEK CELEBRATION

The department of child health nursing ,obstetrics and gynecological nursing and community health nursing ,of KGNC commemorated the world breast feeding week 2015 ,by organizing various health talk and poster presentation on the theme of “Breast feeding and week –Lets make it work”. Core message EXCLUSIVE BREAST FEEDING for 6 months and its advantages / importance was highly emphasized. All session showed high receptivity and was very interactive. The myths and doubt of the mother regarding breastfeeding were wiped away, and they felt highly contented.

The celebration began by 2.00pm after a delicious lunch. The programme began with the college anthem followed by the welcome address delivered by Mr.Surendran, IV yr B.Sc (N) student. INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE & ILLICIT TRAFFICKING 2015

K, Principal, Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Puducherry, The International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking -2015was commemorated on 26.06.2015. The welcome address was given by Mr. Gopal Pillai. Prof.Dr.Renuka.K unfolded the theme of the year –“Let’s Develop Our Lives, Our Community, Our Identities without Drugs”. Ms. K. Vinitha B. Sc (N) IIIyr from AG Padmavathy College of Nursing highlighted the ill effects of consuming alcohol and its impact on family and social life. Ms. Mary Catherin D.E. B. Sc (N) I yr from KGNC threw light on ill effects of drugs, highlighting the role of society in curbing the effects of drug abuse. Mr. M. Arunraj B. Sc (N) I yr from KGNC presented a lucid talk on ill effects of drug abuse, the role of students & mass media to curtail the incidence. The Chief Guest of the programme was Hon.V.Sabapathy, Speaker, Puducherry Assembly. He delivered the special message regarding drug abuse and how to save the community from this enduring danger. He was greatly impressed by the vibrant Speech of Mr. M. Arunraj, Ms. D.E. Mary Catherin and applauded them. Prizes were distributed by the Honorable Chief Guest to the winners of various competitions viz, Essay Writing Competition, Elocution and Poster Presentation conducted by various Nursing Colleges in Puducherry .An Emotional Role Play was enacted by our B. International Yoga Day
June, 2015

“International Yoga Day”, June 21 as being announced by United Nations General Assembly on December 11, 2014 was observed in a grand manner all over India. At KGNC a special programme was organized for the students and faculty along with CYTER, the Yoga Therapy and Research Center of MGMCRI. The programme included a skill session in which Dr. Meena Ramanathan, Co-ordinator, CYTER demonstrated various ‘Yogasanas’ for normal healthy living. Informative speeches were delivered by the special guests, Prof. Madanmohan, Professor & Head, Dept. of Physiology and Director of CYTER on “Psychosomatic Mechanisms of Yoga” and Dr. Anandha Balayogi Bhavanani, Depty. Director, CYTER on “Introduction of Yoga Practices for Health Well Being”.

In his speech, Prof. Madanmohan insisted the importance of yoga and the necessity of practicing yoga in a day to day life.

“To achieve yoga integration at levels of our being, it is essential that we take into consideration the all-encompassing multi dimensions of yoga which includes holistic life style, healthy and natural environment along with various meditation techniques” stated Dr. Anandha while explaining the symbiotic relationship between yoga and modern science.


Red Ribbon Club- Voluntary blood donation camp

Red Ribbon Club of KGNC had actively participated in the programme of “ World Blood Donors Day” and “Voluntary Blood Donation Camp ” which was conducted by Dept. of Transfusion Medicine, MGMC&RI on 15.6.15. Among 15 students , 6 students donated Blood after screening. During this programme, our B.Sc(N) II year student Mr.U.Rama Ragu Raman was appreciated with memento for being a regular Voluntary Blood Donor.

The Farewell Party was celebrated on 17.06.15 in Hotel Mass [Mugil Hall], Puducherry. The party began when the clock strikes 6.00 pm in the evening with college anthem, which was followed by welcome address delivered by Ms. Deepika.K, B. Sc (N) III yr Student. The traditional light was ignited by Prof.Dr.Renuka.K, Principal, Prof.P.Sumathy, Prof. Annie Annal, B.Sc.(N) III & IV year co-ordinator and one student from each year respectively. The programme continued with welcome dance by III yr B. Sc (N) Students, Followed by memento distribution to Exoticanz by the Principal, H.O.D’s, & Asso. Prof of all the department on the basis of social media group. Ms. Mary Catherine I yr B. Sc (N) student shared her valuable quotes on Farewell. Various entertaining colourful & dashing events were staged which was anchored by V.Deepa & Nabina III Yr B. Sc (N) Students. Then vote of thanks was by Ms. Nabina (III yr B. Sc (N). Thereafter Principal gave a precious talk about Farewell Party, were madam highlighted the contributions of Exoticans to the college in academics and extracurricular activities. Madam also expressed her same expectation with the upcoming final year students to take charge in contributing themselves in college activities. Finally the party came to an end by 11’o clock with hearty happiness and with a delicious roof top dinner.

GFATM training for nursing students

Indian Nursing Council had recommended all the institutions to conduct GFATM training for nursing students. In accordance to their guidelines, KGNC had organized a 3 days training programme on HIV/AIDS for final year nursing students. A brief orientation about GFATM and importance of learning HIV/AIDS in depth was provided by Prof. Renuka, Principal, KGNC. Trainers Mr. R. Vijayaraj and Ms. Ruma Shanthini K presented the topics prescribed by Indian Nursing Council like Stigma and discrimination, Epidemiology, HIV nurses role, Prevention of HIV, Challenges faced by the Nurses etc., Role play and demonstrations were conducted for the students to educate them on how to take care of HIV/AIDS patients at clinics.

International Nurses Day at Baby Sarah's Home by KGNC

International Nurses Day was observed on 14 May 2015 and this year theme was “A Force for Change - Improving Health and Well-Being.” The programme had started at 11 am by invoking the blessings from the Lord Almighty. The invocation was rendered by the children from Baby Sarah’s Home. Ms.Selvi, of Baby Sarah’s Home gave a warm welcome to the gathering. Mr. Stephen Raj, M.Sc., M.Phil. B.Ed., DSM, Secretary of Baby Sarah’s Home, briefed on the history of this home and narrated the activities and the future plans. He expressed his happiness and conveyed his Nurses Day wishes to all the faculty members and thanked everyone for celebrating this Nurses Day with their children in their home. The chief guest of the Day, Prof. Dr. RENUKA K., M.Sc. (N), Ph.D., Principal, Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College delivered her speech about the children at Home and also congratulated Mr.Stephen for his dedicated and extraordinary service. She assured and promised that Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College will always support and take part in this service forever with God’s blessings. Followed by the chief guest address, cultural programmes commenced with the welcome dance by Ms.Valli, B.Sc. (N) IV Year, a group dance by B.Sc. (N) I Year students, following which fabulous performances were given by children of Baby Sarah’s home. The other performances included solo song by Ms.Padmapriya. M.Sc.(N) II Year student, group dance by Ms.Sahana and her group- B.Sc. (N) IV Year students. Musical chair was conducted for the children and the winners were awarded with prize. The celebration came to a grand end with the distribution of memento to the children and with a vote of thanks by Mr. Senthil M.Sc., II Year.

International Nurses Day at KGNC

With the blessings of the Lord almighty and under the leadership, support and guidance of Principal, KGNC, Prof. Dr. Renuka.K & Nursing Superintendent, MGMC&RI - Mrs. Amir Ali Khan Asmath, The INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY 2015 was commemorated on 05.06.2015 at the college. The programme commenced with the invocation rendered by IV year B.Sc (N) student, KGNC. A warm welcome was accorded by Prof. Dr. Renuka.K, Principal, KGNC.

Lighting of kuthuvilkaku was forwarded by dignitaries on the dais. Prof. M. Ravi Shankar, Dean, MGMC&RI gave presidential address to the gathering. He in his speech appreciated the nurses for their service and also encouraged them to move further forward towards quality patient care. Mrs. Amir Ali Khan Asmath, Nursing Superintendent, MGMC&RI, unfolded the International Nurses Day Theme and elicited the importance of nursing care which is cost effective and which is care effective. Madam motivated the staff nurses to work with team spirit and develop empathy towards the patients.

Florence Nightingale Pledge was cited by Mrs. Amir Ali Khan Asmath, Nursing Superintendent, MGMC&RI, which was recited by all the Nursing Fraternity.

Dr. Ravichandran.S, Additional Director, MGMC&RI, felicitated the gathering. He in his address appreciated the nurses for their selfless service and also projected a video, which highlighted the concept of empathy.

To acknowledge the service of the nurses, mementoes were distributed & representatives from each grade received it. To recognize the excelling services rendered by the faculty and staff nurses, the Best Faculty, Staff Nurse and ANM was identified and were awarded with Cash Prizes.

Vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Theresa, Assistant Nursing Superintendent, MGMC & RI.

This was followed by various entertaining cultural events staged by the students and staff nurses.


5th National Conference on Recent updates in National Health Services – India
April, 2015

Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College organized a 5th National Level Conference on 30.4.2015. The theme of the conference was “RECENT UPDATES IN NATIONAL HEALTH SERVICE”

The objectives of the conference were

  • To strengthen the ability of the community to manage their resources, prioritize needs, and represent their community interest by keeping up pace with recent advancements in community and maternal health services
  • To accelerate global and national scale up of effective and comprehensive child health services.
  • To destigmatize and demystify mental illness among general public
  • To update the nursing community on national health programmes, immunization services available and to refer the community to utilize the resources
  • To establish emergency medical services with rapid referral system to reduce disability, mortality due to non-communicable disease and communicable diseases
  • To generate new knowledge and ideas to meet up the health care delivery issues in India

The conference started with registration proceeding at 8.30 am. The total numbers of candidates registered were 258. Following that, the inauguration started with the college anthem and the gathering was welcomed by Prof. P. Sumathy, HOD, Department of Child Health Nursing. The presidential address was delivered by Dr. Renuka.K, Principal, KGNC. She justified the reasons for selecting the theme and stated that various health service schemes are available in India for people living below poverty line.

Prof. K.R.Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, SBV, gave the keynote address about the theme. Prof. Ravishankar, Dean (Admin), MGMCRI, felicitated the gathering and noted that the right topic has been chosen as it is the need of all the health professionals.

The Chief Guest address was given by Dr. S. Kamalam, Director of Nursing, Sri Sathya Sai Medical College & Hospitals, Chennai. She emphasized the importance of changes and updates in Health Services available in India. The inaugural programme came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. D. Suguna Mary, Associate Professor, Department of Community Health Nursing.

The first plenary session was commenced by Dr. S. Kamalam at 9.45 am on the topic “Recent Advancements in Community Health Nursing”, she highlighted the services and schemes developed by Govt. of India available for the health consumers. It was an informative session.

After a short tea break, next the plenary session started by 10.30 am on “Current Scenario of Maternal Health Services in India”, presented by Ms. C. Rajeswari, Lecturer, NIMHANS, she focused on schemes available in Maternal and Child Health Services. It was informative and useful.

Next, Prof. Dr. K. Kamala, Principal, VMCON, Karikal, presented on “Government Initiatives in Child Welfare Services”. She elaborated on the various services and programmes available for children and adolescents. Dr. Valliammal Shanmugam, Lecturer, NIMHANS, presented on “National Mental Health Services Available at Door Step”.

The scientific and poster presentation had held between 12.00-1.00 pm. There were 14 paper presentations and very few poster presentation. The paper presentations were evaluated by external and internal faculty members.

During post lunch session, Dr. Karaline Karunagiri. D, RMCON, Chidambaram, had elaborated on “National Health Programmes in India”. Dr. Malavizhi, Vice-Dean, PIMS, explained on the “National Operations for Communicable Diseases”. Dr. V. Seetharaman, HOD, Community Medicine, MGMCRI, focused on “Issues in Health Care Delivery System in India”. Dr. Renuka.K, Principal, KGNC, explained the “National Schemes and Support for Non-Communicable Diseases’. Prof. P. Sumathy, HOD, Department of Child Health Nursing, KGNC, explained briefly about the “Recent Updates in Immunization”. Later the scientific session started and was evaluated by external and internal faculty members.

M.Aripriya, M.Uma, A.Sangavi, V.Sindhu, D.Gowri, B.Dhivya barathi won I place in Throwball and M.Thivyabarathi, V.Sindhu, M.Aripriya, J.Santhasarubini, M.Buvaneshwari, K.Kalaimathy, B.Dhivya barathi, A.Sangavi won first place in Volleyball.

Intercollegiate PG Dissertation Competition and SAF & Research CLUB's Symposium on “Research Methodology”

The Registration of symposium started at 8.30 am on 25 March 2015. The total Registration was 150. The inauguration began with college anthem at 9.15 am. The presidential address was given by the Principal of KGNC & the felicitation was rendered by Dr. Shanmugam. J, Sr. Deputy Director, CIDRF, MGMCRI. The inaugural & keynote address was delivered by our honorable Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K. R. Sethuraman, SBV. Dr. R. Dhanusu, Principal, Sri Manakula Vinayagar Nursing College, Puducherry presented on Research Designs in Nursing. “Essentials of tool designing and application skills” was presented by Prof. Malliga Kannan, Principal, Indirani College of Nursing, Puducherry. The next interesting talk was given by Dr. Shanmugam.J, Sr. Deputy Director, CIDRF, MGMCRI on the topic of “Financial aid for Nursing Research-Achieving Strategies. Prof. KRS delivered his speech on “Tips to write and publish in Indexed Journal with High Impact Factor” and gave his valuable guidance on writing a research publications. The entries for the presentations was evaluated by the panel of judges comprising Prof. Jaisingh, HOD, General Medicine, MGMCRI, Prof. Dr. Renuka. K, Principal, KGNC and Dr. Pooja, Sr. Scientist, CIDRF, MGMCRI. RADIANCE 2015

Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College organized the college day, “RADIANCE - 2015” on 19.03.2015. The occasion begun with the college anthem. Prof. MRS. M. ANNIE ANNAL, HOD, OBG Dept delivered the welcome address, which was followed by Lighting of Kuthuvillaku by the dignitaries. Prof. K.R.SETHURAMAN, Vice Chancellor, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth rendered his valuable presidential address. In his speech, he appreciated the achievements of KGNC and motivated the students to be on a forward march. The release of 1st students magazine, “SPARKLES” was done by the special chief guest DR.R.CHRISTODAS GANDHI, IAS.

The college annual report of 2014 – 2015 was presented by Prof.RENUKA.K Principal, which highlighted the progress and milestones of KGNC. To encourage excelling students in academics, University rank holders were awarded with a shield and certificate.

MRS.GEETHA. C, Associate Professor, Dept of Child Health Nursing, initiated the prize distribution session. The overall trophy was bagged by GREEN HOUSE – EMERALD. A special message was delivered to the audience by the special guest DR. R. CHRISTODAS GANDHI, IAS. Vote of thanks was given by PROF.SUMATHY.P, HOD, Child Health Nursing, and was followed by the colorful cultural programme which was hosted by ARTHY and SURENDRAN (B.Sc (N) IV Yr). Various entertaining events were staged, which grabbed the complete attention of the audience.


WORLD GLAUCOMA WEEK
March, 2015

The Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, KGNC commemorated the world glaucoma week in C. N. Palayam, one of the newly adopted villages of MGMC & RI. KGNC has taken the first initiative to fix the roots in C.N.Palayam. To start with, the social workers from the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, provided an orientation to the students and faculty of KGNC in the community area. The students and faculty of Community Health Nursing conducted a very short survey to analyse the needs of the community. The people had gathered in the community hall with the help of the social worker and IInd year B. Sc. Nursing students to throw light on glaucoma week. The theme of this year was “Beat Invisible Glaucoma”. Ms. Deepika III rd year nursing student welcomed the gathering. B. Sc. Nursing students presented a skit on prevention of blindness due to glaucoma which caught the attention of the gathering. The skit depicted about early identification of signs and symptoms of glaucoma, management of glaucoma and prevention of blindness. The public showed keen interest to watch the skit and raised many queries which were clarified by faculty members and students. Glaucoma pamphlets were distributed to the public. The participants read through the information in the pamphlet. Ms. Aadalarasi IIIrd year B. Sc. Nursing student delivered the vote of thanks.


FACULTY WELFARE PROGRAMME

In association with IQAC & Faculty Welfare Cell of KGNC, II year M. Sc (N) students organized a faculty welfare programme on “Personality Development- A Professional Mandate” as a consecutive event of IQAC – KGNC Calendar.

The program started at 10 am with the invocation and lighting of kuthuvilakku by the dignitaries. Mr. Karthick.S, M. Sc (N) II year student, KGNC gave a warm welcome to the gathering. The beneficiaries were 35 teaching faculty members of KGNC. Ms. Saranya, Assistant. Prof, Dept. of Child Health Nursing introduced the guest speaker Mr. Sridharan.M, yoga master of PSBB Millennium School, who deliberated on “Rejuvenate Mind & Body of Mentors”. He insisted the importance of mind and body rejuvenation in our everyday hassles with the suitable pictures. He also emphasized the necessity of practicing yoga and relaxation techniques in a day to day life. The presentation induced the participants thirst to know more about relaxation techniques.

The second speaker of the day Dr.Mangaiyarkarasi Ravi Rajan. N, Emeritus Scientist, CIDRF, SBV was introduced by Ms. Guna, Assistant. Prof, Dept. of Community Health Nursing. The speaker threw light on “Meditation – Speak with the Soul”. She elicited the importance of meditation and its influence in our turbulence society. She made the session interesting through video clippings, which depicted various meditation techniques.

Followed by the presentation, the skill session was arranged for the beneficiaries. Mr. Sridharan. M, Yoga Master of PSBB Millennium School, demonstrated various basic ‘Yogasanas’ for normal healthy living. Later, Dr. Mangaiyarkarasi Ravi Rajan. N demonstrated various meditation techniques to relax our mind. The group took an active participation by doing return demonstration and found that the personality development programme was much informative and very useful.

WOMEN’S DAY CELEBRATION
March, 2015

The Reproductive Health Unit of department of OBG Nursing, KGNC conducted a Screening and Health Awareness Camp for women on 05.3.15 towards International Women’s Day Celebration in Seliyamedu village, Puducherry. The program was conducted in Rural Health Centre and 35 women had gathered.

With the support of Department of Community Medicine, MGMCRI and B. Sc (N) IV year students, KGNC conducted the Health Screening and Awareness camp which focused on the general assessment of women which includes anthropometric measurement, Hemoglobin estimation and urine analysis. Health Education was provided to the women on early detection of cervical cancer and its management.

Learning Management System (LMS) a long run dream, a milestone in KGNC was inaugurated with the collective efforts of the principal, Dr. Renuka and faculty of KGNC. Department of Medical Surgical Nursing took the leading role of this inauguration on 11-2-2015. Prof.K.R.Seethuraman, Vice Chancellor,SBV unveiled the LMS. Then Prof. Renuka, Principal KGNC gave speech on essence of Learning Management System. The students and invitees were sensitized to E-learning module on hemodynamic monitoring prepared by Ms. Saranya, Lecturer and Ms. Anitha, Lecturer. The Invitees applauded principal and team for taking up the first initiative in SBV.

Mr. Manikandan B.Sc (N) III Year was awarded a special prize of “ Best Performer of the competition” from the Rotary Club. The winners were congratulated by the Principal and Management.


SAF Meet on “Healthy Lifestyle -Healthy Living”

Panel Discussion on “Preparing Nursing Teachers as “MENTORS’’ by Department of Mental Health Nursing

In association with IQAC – KGNC, the Dept of Psychiatric Nursing organized a Panel Discussion as a consecutive event of IQAC – KGNC Events Calendar. The program started with the invocation. Mrs. Gerald Roseline.M, Asst. Prof. Dept of Psychiatric Nursing welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Prabavathy.S, Assoc. Prof and HOD Dept. of Psychiatric Nursing introduced the Panel Members with a grand welcome. Moderator of the Panel Discussion was DR. Mangaiyarkarasi Ravi Rajan, Educationist, Medical Education Unit, SBV AHEAD, MGMCRI. She commenced the program with her deliberation on “Techno savvy Teenagers and Tactful Teachers”. She narrated the importance of technology in our everyday hassles and pinpointed the inevitable situations of technology utilization among the teenagers. Her highlights on the technology usage during mentoring added more flavor to the topic. The video clippings enlightened the minds of the group with better mentoring skills which made the presentation a holistic one.

Secondly DR. Kumar, Clinical Psychologist, Founder of Center for Improving Relationship and Personal Effectiveness, Puducherry, presented on “Strengthening Mentor - Mentee Bond through Psycho-emotional support”. He emphasized more on the need for the emotional bond between Mentor and Mentee and also explained the technique of listening and empathizing while mentoring the students. Mr. Sendhil.V, Psychologist & Counselor gave a précised presentation on “Adolescent Diversity – Mentoring Skills and Styles”. Followed by that, Dr. Avudaiappan, Psychiatrist, MGMC&RI, Puducherry, deliberated on “Balancing within and beyond classroom – teachers’ and learners’ perspectives”. He explained the various models of mentoring which made the concept crisper. Lastly Mrs. Prabavathy.S, Assoc. Prof, HOD, Dept. of Psychiatric Nursing, presented on “Capacity Building of Nursing Faculty as Mentors”. She gave vivid ideas on methods of building, rapidly expanding and sustaining the capacity of nursing faculty for better mentoring.

After the presentation session, the panel was opened for discussion for the following hours. Varieties of questions were thrown to the Panellists by the faculty members and by the student. This paved the way for a strong and powerful discussion yielding a lot of techniques that could be followed while mentoring the students, both in teachers and students perspectives. The moderator ended the discussion with a note of thanks. Principal, Prof.Dr.Renuka. K, honored all the speakers with the Memento. The programme ended with vote of thanks by Ms. Beniya Elizabeth Rani. R, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatric Nursing.


CNE on “SHOO-IN OF QUALITY CARE IN OBSTETRICS”
December, 2014

CNE on “SHOO-IN OF QUALITY CARE IN OBSTETRICS” was inaugurated with over 50 registrants on 18th December 2014. Followed by the college anthem, the gathering was welcomed by Mrs. Lavanya. S, Lecturer OBG Nursing. Dr.Renuka.K, Principal KGNC emphasized in her presidential address, the need for quality care in obstetrics and justified the reason for selecting this theme.

Prof.K.R.Sethuraman, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth in his Inaugural address highlighted the need of the humanistic care to improve the quality of health care. Prof. Latha Abel Principal, Pauls college of Nursing explained in her key note address about the “Quality Assurance in Obstetric Nursing” and she appreciated the organizing committee for the selection of the excellent theme & topics. The inaugural programme came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by Mrs.Jayashakthi, Asst Lecturer, Department of OBG Nursing.

The first plenary session commenced with a presentation on the topic “Quality Assurance through breaking the process challenges in obstetrics’’ by Prof. Latha Abel, Principal, Paul’s college of Nursing. She highlighted on how the challenges can be effectively managed for providing excellent quality care. Dr. Jasmeena Begam Asso. Professor, MGMC&RI spoke on “Client safety in obstetrical care”. She focused on the patient safety in obstetrical care units during the Antenatal, Intranatal & postnatal period. Another presentation on “Nursing care Audit in Obstetrics was presented by Prof.M.Annie Annal, HOD, OBG Nursing Department, KGNC. She elaborated on the Audits carried out in the obstetrical units. Mrs.Lavanya presented on “Infection control measures in labour unit” followed by which, Dr.Danasu.R Principal, Sri Manakula Vinayagar College of Nursing, presented on Professional Standards in obstetrical Nursing” . She elaborated the required Professional standards in obstetrical Nursing”.

A skill session on the topic “Optimizing quality control checklist in obstetrical care units” was organized and the programme came to an end with distribution of certificates to the beneficiaries.


STATE LEVEL CONFERENCE
November, 2014

Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College organized a State Level Conference on the theme ‘BEST PRACTICES IN NURSING TRIAD- EDUCATION, PRACTICE & RESEARCH’

The conference started with registration proceedings at 8:30 am with around 500 registrations. The first plenary session was commenced by Prof .Dr .Rebecca Samson, Dean, College of Nursing, PIMS Puducherry at 9:00 a.m. on the topic “BETTER STUDENT OUTCOME THROUGH BEST PRACTICES”. She highlighted the best practices that a teacher and student should follow in order to have better student outcome. It was very useful and informative session.

Following that the inauguration of the conference was held at 10:15am. It started with the college Anthem and the gathering was welcomed by Prof.P.Sumathy, HOD Pediatric Nursing. The theme was unfolded by Dr. Renuka. K Principal, KGNC. She justified the reason for selecting this theme, and stated that best practices in all areas have to be identified and implemented to enhance the quality of care.

Prof. K.R. Sethuraman, Vice Chancellor of Sri Balaji Vidhyapeeth presided over the function, and in his Presidential address informed that the ideal way to bridge the gap between theory and practice is research, and the right topic has been chosen as it is the need of the hour. Prof. N. Krishnan, Dean of MGMC &RI felicitated the gathering. The chief guest address was given away by Prof .Dr .Rebecca Samson, Dean, CON PIMS. She emphasized the importance of correlating theory with practice. The inaugural programme came to an end with the vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Geetha.C, Assoc. Prof. Department of child Health Nursing.

After a short tea break (10:45a.m – 11a.m) the plenary session was on ‘NOVEL METHODS TRIGGERING CHANGES IN NURSING EDUCATION’ presented by Dr. B.Sreelekha from 11.00a.m–11:45a.m. She focused on innovative teaching methods that can be adopted to foster student’s interest. Followed by, Dr. Renuka. K presented on MULTIDIMENSIONAL APPROACHES IN NURSING RESEARCH from 11.45 to 12.30p.m. She elaborated on the various approaches in carrying out nursing research.

The scientific and poster presentations had held in which 21 papers and 2 posters were presented. A group discussion on “Quality approaches in patient care” was chaired by Prof. Sumathy. The conference was concluded with distribution of certificate and memento for best paper presented at the conference along with certificates for each Institution/hospital.


NEW BORN WEEK CELEBRATION
November, 2014

In commemoration of new born week celebration, the child health nursing department conducted elocution competition, essay competition and health talk based on the theme - ”NEONATAL-PERINATAL HEALTH CARE AT COMMUNITY INTERFACES”. B.Sc Nursing IV year students participated and competed in these competitions. Health talk as outreach programme regarding new born care and danger signs of new born based on the theme NEONATAL-PERINATAL HEALTH CARE AT COMMUNITY INTERFACES” was presented by IV year B.Sc Nursing students under the guidance of faculty of Department of child health nursing to the postnatal mothers at kirumampakkam PHC ,Pondicherry.


SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME
November, 2014

B.Sc., (N) IV year students of KGNC had organised a school health programme on the theme “Personal Hygiene”. The programme held at the Government Primary School, Seliamedu. Through role play, video show and direct interaction with students awareness was created on Personal Hygiene including Dental Hygiene, Importance of Bathing , Handwashing,etc., The programme included a role play on “Importance of Personal Hygiene” and video show on “Importance of Dental Hygiene including Brushing techniques”.


BREAST CANCER AWARENESS PROGRAMME
November, 2014

The reproductive health unit of department of OBG Nursing, KGNC conducted a Breast Cancer Awareness Programme on 06.11.14 at 10.30 – 12.00 Noon in Seliamedu village, Puducherry. The programme was conducted in Anganwadi Centre and 30 women had gathered.

The programme started with a welcome address by Ms. Monika IV year B.Sc (N) and Ms. Amuthavalli , highlighted the increasing incidence of breast cancer nowadays, its causes, and the need for initial screening by breast self examination. This was followed by video clippings on how to perform a breast self examination.

The retention of the steps of breast self examination was further enhanced by issuing pamphlets. There was a very good response, and many women came with queries, that were answered.


World Diabetes Day
November, 2014

In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day on 14th November 2014, the Department of Medical Surgical Nursing, KGNC joined hands with the Department of General Medicine, MGMCRI and organized an awareness programme. The awareness programme started off with a rally by the faculty of general medicine and medical surgical nursing department, KGNC, CRRI, PG’s and UG students of KGNC from the main gate to MRD venue of MGMCRI Campus. The programme was inaugurated by the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Nirmal Coumare, Dr. Jaisingh, HOD, General Medicine & Dr. Lakshmana Perumal, Residential Medical Officer, MGMCRI.

There was a health talk on diabetes, prevention and management by Dr. Lakshmana Perumal & Dr. Kalirathiname, Asso.Prof, General Medicine followed by a brief talk regarding the dietary modifications in diabetes by the nutritionist. It was followed by Human Puppet show by B.Sc(N) II year students on the theme “Prevention Of Type I Diabetes Among Young Adults” which gained the attention of the whole gathering and received a huge applause from the spectators. The programme continued with video programme on diabetes which revealed the pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, risk factors, treatment, management and complication of diabetes. Queries from the gathering were clarified by the speakers.


World Osteoporosis Day
November, 2014

World Osteoporosis Day is observed on 5th November every year. In conjuction with this, department of surgical nursing, KGNC had arranged for an awareness camp at rural health center, Seliamedu. Over 40 rural women of both pre and post menopausal age group participated in the programme. A health talk on “Prevention and Management of Osteoporosis” was delivered to the gathering by Ms. Nandhini, Mr. Promoth, Ms. Patchaiamma B.Sc., (N) IIyr. Pamphlets were handed over to many during the programme.


Fresher's Party
October, 2014

The students of KGNC had organized a fresher’s party to welcome the newcomers on 25th October 2014. The programme started by 10.am with the college anthem and Ms. Narmada 2nd year B.Sc Nursing gave the welcome address. The do started with lighting of the lamp by the Principal, KGNC, Vice Principal and co-ordinators of 1st year and 2nd year and a representative from the newcomers.

To foster a cordial relationship between the fresher’s and senior students, cultural programme was organized by seniors. The stage was later shared by the newcomers to showcase their talents. Children from baby sarah home also participated in the event. Along with the seniors these children presented a welcome card to the newcomers and entertained them with their cute cultural performance. A sum of Rs. 5000/- was given as a token of love to the Baby Sarah home by the B.Sc.(N)2nd year students along with memento for each kid.

The event ended by great appreciation by the Prinicipal Mrs.Renuka and SNA Vice President Mr. Dhandapani, for the untiring effort of the senior students for organizing such a wonderful event.


World Mental Health Day
October, 2014

A Rally flagged by Hon’ble Chief Minister, Thiru. N. Rangasamy marked the observance of World Mental Health Day at KGNC. The Rally started off from Kamban Kalai Arangam Campus, Old Bus Stand to NewBus Stand- Puducherry. (Via Anna Salai, KamarajSalai, Lenin Street, Nellithope, MarimalaiAdigalSalai).

This rally was organized by Department of Mental Health Nursing and students of KGNC to create awareness on Promoting Mental Health in view of removing the stigma of Schizophrenia among the General Public and to motivate the general public on the ways to care the Schizophrenic patients in a humanistic approach.

The objective was achieved well by the theme based Placards, Face painting, Pamphlet distribution and Mike Announcements. The students with the Placards verbally propagated about the theme “Living with Schizophrenia” using Slogans throughout the rally. This accentuated more reflection on the theme of World Mental Health Day 2014.The tremendous effort of the students fulfilled the complete meaning and purpose of the rally.


RASTRIYA EKTA DIVAS (NATIONAL UNITY DAY)
October, 2014

The birth anniversary of Shri Sardar Valla bhai Patel was observed on 31st October 2014 ,as the “Rashtriya Ekta Diwas” (National Unity Day)at KGNC. On 30th October 2014 a poster competition was conducted on the Theme National Unity, Safety &Security. A total of 13 posters were displayed in KGNC ground floor. Prof.Seetharaman HOD of Community Medicine, MGMC&RI &Prof.P.Sumathy HOD Dept OF Child Health Nursing evaluated the posters.

PUBLIC RALLY

To create awareness among the public on Unity, Safety &Security on 31st of October 2014, around 350 students participated in a rally which was flagged of by Prof.N. AnanthaKrishnan, Dean PG studies & Research of SBV at 9.15.am.The rally commenced from MGMC&RI campus & the students spread the message of Unity, Safety &Security by shouting slogans and by using Placards. 10 students had beautiful and captivating face paintings depicting the theme. The rally ended at Kirumampakkam, a nearby Village by 11.15.am.

PLEDGE ADMINISTRATION

At 12.45.pm on 31/10/3014, before lunch break all students and faculty members of KGNC assembled in the ground floor corridor of KGNC and took the oath of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge both in English and Tamil which was administered by The Principal KGNC.The importance of National Unity , Safety &Security was emphasized on this occasion.

Dept of Child Health Nursing,KGNC along with IQAC, conducted a workshop on Diarrhea Management on 17.07.14 at KGNC 1st Floor Lecture Hall from 9.30 am – 12.30 pm. The beneficiaries of the program were III year B.Sc (N) students. The programme commenced with welcome address by Prof. Sumathy. P, HOD, Dept of Child Health Nursing. Mrs. Rajeswari, Asso. Prof introduced the theme and objectives of the workshop followed by presentation and skill sessions.
